The fix, step by step
-
1
Pick the schema types that match your pages
Article for blog posts. Product for ecommerce. FAQPage for FAQ sections. Organization for the homepage. BreadcrumbList for any deep page. Don't add schema that doesn't match the actual content — Google ignores or penalizes mismatched schema.
-
2
Write the JSON-LD
JSON-LD is the format Google recommends. Wrap it in <script type="application/ld+json"> in the head. Schema.org has the field reference; Google Search Central docs list the required fields per rich-result type.
-
3
Validate before deploying
Paste the rendered HTML into Google's Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results). It tells you whether the schema is valid and which rich-result type it qualifies for. Fix every error before pushing to production.
-
4
Watch the Search Console enhancement reports
Search Console > Enhancements shows when Google detects schema, what type, and any errors at scale. Coverage problems show up here days after the rich result starts (or fails to start) appearing in actual results.
