Mobile-first indexing means the mobile rendering is the primary index — desktop is the fallback. A site that looks fine on desktop but breaks on a phone (tap targets too close, content wider than the viewport, fonts smaller than 12px) is the version Google uses to score the page. Test on a real device, not the browser dev tools resize.
